| ENVIROTHON COMPETION |

The New York State Envirothon is sponsored by the New York State Soil and Water Conservation District is and is designed to: Test student's knowledge and understanding of natural resources issues within New York State Cultivate student's desire to learn more about our natural resources and environmental issues The spirit of competition stimulates student's interests in environmental concerns and motivates them to further develop their skills and grow into environmentally-aware, action-oriented adults. Envirothon activities begin locally with teams of five high school students testing their knowledge in five areas: aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, and a current issue. These teams compete for the county Envirothon title. Local competitions are sponsored by the county conservation districts, with a helping hand from local environmental or recreational civic groups or environmentally conscious companies and individuals. County winners then move on to the state contest where their knowledge is again challenged in the same five areas. Once a team is chosen as State Envirothon Champions, it's members become New York State's representatives at the Canon National Envirothon. The Canon National Envirothon is held in different states. New York State teams have placed in the top ten teams at national competitions since the first NYS Envirothon in 1990. Today's students will be tomorrow's property owners, government officials, parents, and teachers. Make a fun investment in the future of our environment.
