The Farm Service Agency (FSA) administers programs for farmers dealing
with commodities, crop insurance, credit, environmental conservation, and
emergency assistance. The purpose of FSA is to stabilize farm income while
also helping farmers conserve land and water resources, provide credit to new
or disadvantaged farmers and ranchers and help farm operations recover from
the effects of disaster.
Despite name changes, the relationship that FSA has with producers is a result
of the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1933 which was in response to the
Great Depression where nearly 1/3 of all farmers lost their farms due to
bankruptcy.
Allegany County is broken up into 3 Local Administrative Areas (LAA):
1. Alfred, Allen, Almond, Amity, Angelica, Birdsall, Burns, Grove, Ward and
West Almond
2. Belfast, Caneadea, Centerville, Cuba, Friendship, Granger, Hume, New
Hudson, and Rushford
3. Alma, Andover, Bolivar, Clarksville, Genesee, Independence, Scio,
Wellsville, Willing and Wirt.
Each LAA is represented by an elected member on the Ccommittee. In
addition to the voting members there is also an individual who serves as the
Minority Advisor giving a voice to women and minorities on the committee.
The County Committee is the 'Grassroots' approach to administering the FSA
programs. The Committee's insight are invaluable as they offer knowledge and
experience of the area and farming practices that are used in the area to make
decisions for the county.
